Overview
ASTM A351 Grade CF3M is an austenitic stainless steel casting alloy, essentially the cast equivalent of 316L stainless steel. The designation CF3M indicates a corrosion-resistant (C) cast alloy in the Fe-Cr-Ni family (F), with a maximum carbon content of 0.03% (the “3”) and containing molybdenum (M) for enhanced corrosion resistance. It falls under ASTM specifications for corrosion-resistant steel castings, including ASTM A351/A351M (for pressure-containing parts) and ASTM A743/A744 (for general and severe corrosion-resistant applications). CF3M is known for its excellent corrosion resistance (comparable or superior to its wrought 316L counterpart) and good mechanical strength. This alloy is commonly used for cast components such as valves, pump bodies, impellers, and fittings, especially in industries where both corrosion resistance and the ability to produce complex shapes via casting are needed. Typical application sectors include chemical processing, marine equipment, pharmaceutical and food processing, pulp/paper, and energy (power generation and nuclear) industries. In summary, CF3M is a versatile cast stainless steel that provides the low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing benefits of 316L in a form suited to large or intricate cast components.
